A Spirulina shake to smurf things up!

Spirulina is a nutrient-rich super algae that turns blue when soaked. So why not use this piece of information to smurf things up when making a vegan Spirulina Sprinkles drink? A vegan milkshake that’s both delicious and good for you. And blue!

A milkshake with nutrients and vitamins

It’s easy to make a classic milkshake the vegan way. All you need is vegan ice cream, non-dairy milk and a pinch of Spirulina Sprinkles. Add a topping of vegan whipped cream or coconut cream for an extra festive feeling. Spirulina is a superfood that is packed with vitamins, minerals, beta-carotene and protein. That’s all well and good for you and it can also turn your milkshake slightly blue. Smurf!

Natural and plant-based colour

You can use the Spirulina Sprinkles just as they are, but if you soak them for a while in your non-dairy milk before mixing the shake you give the spirulina time to let go of the blue it got. If you want a deep blue colour then soak 1 tablespoon of spirulina in a cup of water overnight, put it in the fridge. The next day you have a really deep blue coloured water to add to your food of choice. The best part? It’s a totally natural and plant-based colour! Remember, if your non-dairy milk isn’t completely white it will affect the end result of the smurf colour. However, we suggest you choose the ingredients you like for a smashing result!

A yummy recipe with spirulina


  •  Spirulina Sprinkles
  •  Vegan vanilla ice cream
  •  Vegan whipped cream
  • Non-dairy milk of your choice


  1.  Whip the cream. Maybe add some vanilla and lemon zest for extra zing?
  2. Put the vegan ice cream, non-dairy milk and spirulina in a mixer. If you soaked the spirulina in water then use some of the blue water approx 1/2 tablespoon. Start adding a little bit of spirulina and add more if you want, but taste the shake before adding more. MIX IT!
  3. Pour the shake into pretty glasses and top it off with the whipped cream. Sprinkle some Spirulina Sprinkles on top, add a paper straw and you are done.
  4. Ready to serve!
